When you think of escaping from reality, you think vanishing to lands far and wide, but with far flung destinations comes a whole world of planning and stress, so when it comes to an indulgent escape, staying in Yorkshire works perfectly! And what better place to stay than the beyond beautiful Principal York!
The Principal York is one of the most beautiful buildings, looming over York train station and boasting full-on sprawling grounds right in the centre of the city…so for a townie like me it’s an escape from the norm without missing the city too much.
Car parked, we were greeted by Stephen, the valet, who not only welcomed us with the biggest grin, he also was super helpful with our bags and even offered to get an umbrella for us to save us from the impending downpour. It might seem like small thing, but seriously when it comes being an awesome hotel, it’s the small touches that guests remember.
Once inside I spent a solid 5 minutes basically repeating ‘oh wow’, ‘woah look at that’, ‘it’s amazing’, the whole hotel has been completely transformed in the last few years, gone are the dark wood panels and traditional decor and in it’s place are vast, modern yet sympathetic spaces that scream *politely* glamour, sophistication and comfort. Three things every hotel should be in my mind. Having worked for the company many years ago, it was so wonderful to see new life filling every pore of this incredible building.
Our room was nestled at the end of the second floor, with a beautiful view not only of the manicured gardens but of the cathedral as well, which really was a lovely surprise. Second only to the cathedral view was the thoughtful hamper and note left by the team, York Brewery booze, a witty Yorkshire tea towel, crisps and chocolate made for a very happy Emma!
The room itself was perfectly laid out, incredibly comfortable beds *with sockets next to them!*, a full length mirror *always appreciated*, a fancy dressing table along with a spacious bathroom with shower and Elemis goodies.
I love the little details around the room, like the retro phone, extra USB sockets, slippers and robes, not to mention the beautiful Principal mugs that all of their hotels have tucked away. There really was everything you could ever need
We didn’t have much time to enjoy it though as out the door we headed to Skosh for a beyond tasty lunch, whole post about that incoming…
Just when we thought that we had no space left for any more tasty treats the Principal York team whisked us off to the Garden Room for afternoon tea, with added cocktails! But not before we had a lovely wander back from the centre of the city through the blossom, which is surely one of the prettiest sights.
From pink blossom to marshmallows and cocktails, heavenly…
Rather than the traditional afternoon tea, we went for the Twilight Tea, an evening alternative you might say, including finger sandwiches, home-made scones with jam and clotted cream, dainty cakes and pastries and paired with your choice of a Bramble cocktail or Virgin Blueberry Mojito.
Both cocktails were really beautiful and paired really well with the sweet treats. Sadly the sandwiches were a bit of a let down and if you are more of a savoury fan than a sweet one, I wouldn’t recommend the Twilight tea as it is more dessert focused. That being said, sitting in the window of a beautiful lounge with my lovely mamma, chatting about life as the sun began to set, I’m not sure in that moment I wanted to be anywhere else.
After filling up on sweetness and gin we headed to one of the other lounges, Scrabble & a bottle of red wine in hand and proceeded to spend the evening not being able to think of more than 5 letter words and getting merrily merry.
I must admit after a wonderful day and awesome nights sleep I was really sad to be leaving Principal York, as well as being a stunning venue, the whole Principal York experience was elevated even further by the outstanding level of service, from bar staff to concierge, house keeping to front of house.
If a little luxury not far from home is your idea of perfection then you need to book a stay. I know i’ll be back, in fact I’m booked in at the end of the summer for spa weekend and i’ll be taking my lovely pooch with me too!
Huge thank you to Principal York for taking such good care of us and treating us so well, I can’t wait to be back!
*I was very kindly gifted both my stay and the Twilight Tea, however as always there’s nothing but honesty in my post.
