I love America, I love their brash and bold culture, their complete and utter certainty in their own awesomeness, but most of all, above and beyond anything else they make fricking awesome burgers. They understand the simple joy of perfectly grilled steak, thick slabs of ripe tomato, crisp lettuce and a lightly toasted bun…yum!
Whilst travelling around America I ate some amazing burgers, In and Out, Five Guys and some incredible dive in Georgetown. Since I landed back in the UK a year ago I struggled to find that exquisite ideal burger..and then whilst in London visiting a client I stepped out of their office and right in front of me was Byron. Oh the things I have heard about the place, simple delightfully american must have burgers.
The tag line is ‘proper hamburgers’ and I couldn’t agree more, the menu is simple, a concise list of seven burgers, a smattering of delicious sauces and burger accessories including the most wonderful Byron sauce, avocado and a cheese lovers selection of meltable toppers.
Tom Byng, founder of Byron has this to say about the simplicity of the food;
We source good beef from Scotland. We mince it fresh every day. We cook it medium so it’s pink, juicy and succulent. We place it in a soft, squishy bun with minimum fuss and fanfare. We serve it with a smile in a comfortable environment. And that’s it.
Add to that the delightful potato based sides, the scummy skins on chunky chips and the quintessential skinny fries. and oh lord the Mac and Cheese…yum yum!
Not to mention the awesome selection of craft beers, including Brooklyn, Brewdog and Camden Gentleman’s Wit, but most wonderfully my favourite beer and the hardest to get a hold of, Kernel Table Beer, so yummy, especially in the middle of the day after a successful meeting.
So there you have it the best burgers this side of the States, the meat is perfect, the bread neither too soft or over toasted, the condiments on the table simply classic.
But fret not meat fans, its not just Londoners getting to sample the delights of Byron with 5 locations in Livepool, Manchester, Kent, Oxford and Cambridge.
I am always on the look out for awesome foodie places to visit, if you know some let me know! I am planning a food road trip around the UK next year so the more recommendations the better!
