Harrogate is awash with eateries, every kind of cuisine you can imagine. I never cease to be amazed by the amount of restaurants that pop up in this little metropolis that I call home, however I have never been quite as excited as when I heard my favourite independent coffee place in Harrogate was branching out and opening in the evening serving a Nordic inspired menu. You can imagine my delight was heightened when owner Paul emailed me to invite me to the first night their tasting events, which have run throughout this week. Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you, Nord at Baltzersens.
The menu will be short and sweet, 6-8 dishes, crafted by the skilled hands of chef Murray Wilson and his team. Wilson has had quite the career to date, including Hotel Du Vin, Van Zellers and Yorke Arms, not to mention being a finalist of Masterchef Season One. He brings his unique style and ingenious creativity to the menu at Nord, starting with this incredible salad…
There were so many components of this beautiful salad I would need a whole post just to talk about them, but I don’t want to give away the joy of tasting and delighting in the whole experience. What I will tell you however is this, I have never tasted a salad like this, the textures and flavours are truly unique, it was a real joy to eat and the rest of the table was in agreement.
The second dish was a plate of utter joy, lightly smoked salmon that was then poached, rested on toasted rice and smoked cream cheese, balanced beautifully with a light foam, the most moorish super crispy salmon skin and delicate sashimi style rolls. All in all a super duper dish, one I would happily eat time and time again.
The final course was so good I only order ambien online is it legal managed to get one picture of it, before Amy and I demolished it. Centred around a dark chocolate ganache mouse, paired with slithers of freeze dried strawberries, a strawberry gel and caramel sorbet, all of which complimented each other so wonderfully I was truly saddened when I ate the last mouthful.
Paul and the team are just as keen to stress the importance of drinks, Nord offerd a compact range to match the food but variety to offer a different glass to compliment every dish; be that a cocktail, craft beer or wine. 3 cocktails devised by the in-house Barkeep Micky Pearson, these are Gin, Vodka and Rum based. They also have a range of ales from Bad Seed Brewery based in Malton. The wine list has been selected with the aid of expert ‘Curator’ and includes several varietals that are less common such as Viognier (which I would happily have polished off a bottle of), Verdicchio, Pecorino and Montepulciano.
The whole evening was a roaring success, wonderful wine paired with the fabulous dishes, great company and a relaxed atmosphere, I cannot wait for the official launch of Nord on the 4th April, although from the sounds of it they are fully booked, if you head over to the website you can book online, I promise you will not be disappointed.
Thank you again to the wonderful team for inviting me along, Murray & Paul congratulations on a truly wonderful venture, here’s to many more Nordic Nights in Harrogate. Great big thanks as well goes to Giles, who took some fabulous photos on the night, some one which he kindly allowed me to use in this post.
