There are some people in the world who should be listened to, Molly Ford is one of them, her blog Smart Pretty Awkward, each post of Molly’s offers up quirky, insightful snippets of awesomeness, including how to be a little smarter, a little prettier and a little less awkward!
I am most certainly not her only fan, in the last of my Inspired Interviews, Sarah shared her love for Molly and her blog, high praise indeed!
Molly kindly invited me to her blogs 5th Blog Birthday in NYC, if only it wasn’t almost 3,500 miles away I would be there in a New York minute! I loved interviewing Molly, I am sure you are going to love her insights too!

Your blog is an inspiration for so many people, where do you find your inspiration?
Thank you! My biggest source of inspiration is from the books I read. I only recommend the ones I really love, but I read about a book a week. I think the constant flow of new ideas from authors helps to keep my mind thinking creatively. The list is long for sure, included are 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam, Quiet by Susan Cain and Seriously, I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres.
Although you are hugely successful now, what generic of ambien would you say were the hardest elements of carving a successful blog?
For me, the hardest part of writing a blog is to write consistently. When life hits busy periods, making time to write and edit a post gets harder.
If you knew 5 years ago what you know now, what advice would you give yourself?
Probably the same advice I would give myself now: Molly, drink more water and stop carrying around so much in your purse: you’re going to work, not to Europe!
If you could recommend the best books or blogs or advice what would they be?
I really think a must-read book is “The Defining Decade” by Meg Jay. That would be my #1 pick for a read this year. I have a huge roster of blogs I love, but some of my favourite right now are: Yes and Yes, 40:20 Vision, Life After College and Ramshackle Glam.
If you had to choose your favourite blog post on Smart, Pretty & Awkward what would it be and why?
My all-time favourite blog post is my first post. On its own, its not terribly interesting and I wouldn’t post anything like it now, but it’s what started me on this whole journey and is very special to me. The song from the title quote, “Charmed Life” by Leigh Nash, is still one of my favourites.
If you could give those thinking of starting a blog, or just having just started out, what 3 pieces of priceless advice what would they be?
Write for three months without telling anyone, so you have time to refine your voice in private without an audience and make sure you really love blogging, write often, and only publish content you are proud of.
Lastly, what is next for you and the blog, anything exciting in the pipeline?
I just had Smart, Pretty & Awkward’s 5 year anniversary party in NYC, and it was an awesome success where I got to meet so many sweet, talented readers. It got my brain spinning about more offline events I could do, but in the short-term the next project I’m going to work on is categorizing the blog tips, to make viewing by topic (relationships, college, etc.) easier for readers!
