If there is one place in the world I feel most inspired, it’s New York, everything about the city is an assault on the senses in the best way. One of the things I usually struggle with though is what the hell do I pack, I want to look stylish yet also feel comfortable enough to explore, party and relax. So I thought it was only right I stick by my own style rules and share with you what I’ll be packing for my New York adventure.
First up, let’s be honest anyone running around New York in heels is a sadist! Sure they look fab and I’m 100% throwing a pair of nude courts in my bag, but it’s going to be all about the flats this trip.
I don’t think it’s possible to go on a city break and not take white pumps with you, surely they’re a wardrobe staple not to be ignored. That being said although I love my Converse, I also love them staying relatively clean, which is why I LOVE this dupe from Deichmann, they are a fraction of the price, fit as well as the originals and I don’t feel quite as bad if they come home covered in all things NYC!
They go with EVERYTHING, seriously I have yet to find an outfit they don’t work with, I’ve even seen brides rocking them! No wedding dress for me in New York, but there will be many outfit changes and whether i’m rocking a tee and ripped jeans or something a little more swanky for the evening, they go!
Talking of swanky outfits, can we take a moment to appreciate the wonder of paper-bag trousers, not a trend I thought for even a moment that I could pull off, but as it seems I can! They accentuate my waist to hip ratio, they give me sleek lines and paired with an off the shoulder black top they almost give the illusion of a jumpsuit without all the faffing around when you need the loo!
Off-the-shoulder tops are the perfect twist on a basic, it’s the same material as many of my basic tees and long sleeve tops but has the added sex appeal of bare shoulders, making it the perfect evening top. Small enough to throw into your bag and change into for the evening, even if the rest of your outfit is simple and casual, the flash of skin screams party!
When it comes to my style rules I know that to get the most out of my wardrobe sticking with a neutral palette is key, which is why there won’t be any patterns heading to the Big Apple with me, instead I’ll be maximising denim, white, black and grey with a touch of green.
Despite being away for 10 nights I am only taking 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of trousers, 2 t shirts, 1 off shoulder top, 1 shirt and 2 jumpers. Plus 3 jackets (it’s New York in Spring after all!) and three pairs of shoes. If I tried hard I could fit all of that into hand luggage! Who am I kidding though, I’m taking the biggest case I can to bring back all the goodies from NYC, there are lots of pairs of Levi’s with my name all over them! Ripped jeans are surely some of the best things to come from the high street. Whilst I am all for higher priced denim, when it comes to distressed and ripped pairs Primark and River Island are hard to beat, not only in terms of how they look but how they fit too! The high waisted distressed jeans from Primark come in about 11 washes and at £13 a pair are the perfect addition to a capsule wardrobe if you’re looking for something a little more trend focused that won’t break the bank.
I love the look of ripped jeans, sexy off the shoulder top and white sneakers, it says understated style to me, and that’s totally what I’m about, and what I love wearing in New York. Throw a leather jacket on, a scarf and a beanie hat and you’re sightseeing ready!
Let’s talk heels! As much as I would love to rock my most OTT heels Carrie Bradshaw style, I know full well that the cobbles of Chelsea Market just are not made for skinny stilettos that cost me a months mortgage, no matter how much I love them. So instead of carting them over the Atlantic for them to just stay in my case, this time I’m sticking to my old faithfuls, comfortable, nude and entirely versatile.
They’re also not so bulky that they can’t be thrown into my bag ready to be slipped on as the sun sets and cocktail hour is calling.
Going for a nude tone not only means they go with everything, they are also super flattering as they give the impression of longer legs and let’s face it at 5ft2″ I’m hardly blessed in the leg department so any little bit of help I can get is grabbed firmly with both hands, or feet in this case!
So there you have it, my New York in Spring wardrobe…have I missed anything? Let me know cos I have a little time before I go!
