Firstly let me just say, I’m beyond distraught that although Gilmore Girls is now on Netflix, it’s only in the States and not here!
Despite my utter despair I decided to embrace my never wavering love for Lorelai & Rory by sharing with you the things Gilmore Girls taught me
1. Coffee is everything
I love coffee, that’s why I believe Lorelai is my spirit animal. Most episodes Lorelai is more than a little vocal about her inability to function without coffee, I feel that. To be honest, I am more than a little suspicious of any grown person who doesn’t drink coffee…it’s just as important to me as oxygen, seriously.
2. Love, Ain’t Easy
Despite both of the Gilmore’s being crazy smart, funny and beautiful they are still as much of failure when it comes to love as us real life girls. They over think, over share and most of all love wildly with no real concern for the future. They don’t have types, they don’t have easy relationships with perfect men, they make mistakes then they talk about them, eat junk food and make a plan. If that ain’t real life, I don’t know what is! Also I am holding out for my own Luke Danes, he must be out there…
3. Mums Matter
Now, I am well aware the relationship that Lorelai and Rory has is fictional, however a lot of their little quirks might just be the best mother daughter relationship tips out there. First of all, be more than parent and child, learn to be friends, if you don’t you are missing out on all the wonderfulness that parents bring, remember they are functioning humans as well as your mum or dad. Secondly, they always have you back, I mean ALWAYS, no matter what shit I am going through my mum is there waiting with either advice or a shoulder to cry on. Thirdly, they know how to make things better, especially when it comes to comfort food…
4. Pizza & Cake Food Groups
Sure both of them are crazy slim and never seem to change weight despite the heaps of junk food they eat, however they have a good point, there is nothing better in this world when shit hits the fan that pizza and ice cream. I have said before my thoughts on women denying themselves foods because the world tells you they are bad for you, no food is bad for you FYI just go easy on the pop tarts one day a week!
5. Do What You Need To Do
Lorelai & Rory both did this over and over again, they ran away from home, they dropped out of Yale, they broke up with boyfriends who everyone else thought was ‘right’. They forged their own lives, time and time again. Their goals for themselves mattered. THAT is a positive message for young girls. Do what you need to do, make the life you want, don’t wait around for a man, or the perfect moment, throw yourself into life and know that if it matters to you, it matters.
6. The Theme Tune
With every great show comes a suitably awesome theme tune, Gilmore Girls is no different, the lyrics entirely sum up the relationship between Lorelai and Rory, and every time I hear even a snippet of it I smile…
If you’re out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I’ll be there on the next train…
So there you have it, the 5 things Gilmore Girls taught me, I would love to know your favourite thing about the show? Let me know in the comments below, lets all reminisce together and pray that Netflix UK get it together and show it over here ASAP
